Case Study: Performance Management |
|
In this large UK charity, poorly performing staff tended to be moved around the organisation rather than the poor performance being dealt with. We carried out an analysis of why these issues weren't being addressed and developed an in-depth 2-day workshop to equip managers with the skills and confidence to deal with poor performance in their teams. The innovative methodology used real issues that participants were currently dealing with. It helped managers to become able to analyse the cause of the poor performance and therefore use the right approach to improving it. Actors were used to practise different approaches and build confidence. Sometimes unfortunately it is not possible to improve performance due to capability or other issues. Therefore participants learnt how to use capability and disciplinary procedures appropriately. All participants left the workshop with immediate actions to put into practice with their underperforming staff member. An evaluation 3 months later showed that over 80% of the participants had now dealt successfully with poor performance within their team. Feedback comments include: 'This is the best course I have ever been on!' 'My manager and her manager need to come on this course.' 'I feel so much more confident now to speak to Maggie* about her coming late to work.' *names have been changed for confidentiality |
